Welcome to our Groupsite for Small Island Developing States

The most urgent environmental challenge is being faced by these small island communities around the world.  They can be seen as the Canaries in the Coal Mines; but when their oxygen levels become depleted, and they stop breathing, we are all affected. Thus we are all living in a shared coal mine and we need to ensure that the oxygen levels remain adequate enough to keep supporting life.

Since its establishment by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001 and in accordance with its mandate, the UN OHRLLS has played a role in furthering the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action for the SIDS, first conference in Barbados.

The UN-OHRLLS played a key role in the preparatory process for the Mauritius International Meeting, the second conference on SIDS.  It was instrumental in mobilizing resources for the participation of SIDS delegations to preparatory meetings and the International Conference itself, as well as for the participation of representatives of civil society, non-governmental organizations and the private sector
